OUR PEOPLE • Piauí
The mud hut is a very common type of dwelling place on the Islands of the Delta of Parnaíba.
Generally, when someone marries or “lives together”, friends and parents join together and work on building a place where the new couple will live. They take wood and clay from the swamp, to build the walls, and Carnaúba straw, for the roof.
The clay is mixed with water and stamped on with their own feet, until it is well mixed. Then the spaces between the wood, interlaced by hand, are filled by hand. In one or two days, at the most, everything is ready!
