The months of July to December are months with very little rain. This period is known as summer in Maranhão. In November many lakes dry up and there is very little water in the wells that survive the drought. There are also strong winds that make sailing on the sea difficult, and moving of people to the city.
When January comes, it begins to rain all day long. This happens until June, a period called winter in Maranhão. During this period the wells and lakes fill up and there is a lot of water, but not treated for drinking, and this causes many sicknesses caused by water contaminated with bacteria.
During the whole year, be it summer or winter, it is always hot in Maranhão.
